10% off — the most common sale discount

A 10% discount is one of the most frequent markdowns in retail, used for loyalty rewards, introductory offers, and store-wide promotional events. To calculate 10% off any price mentally, just move the decimal point one place to the left — that's the amount you save. For a $45 item: save $4.50, pay $40.50.

Ten percent discounts are also commonly stacked with other promotions. If a store advertises "10% off everything, plus an extra 5% for members," the combined effective discount is 1 − (0.90 × 0.95) = 14.5% — not 15%. Use the calculator above for any price.

How to calculate 10% off

Multiply the original price by 0.90 (which is 1 − 10/100):

Sale Price = Original × 0.90

For example, 10% off $50: $50 × 0.90 = $45.00. You save $5.00.
